How Does AdWords Work

AdWords ad are displayed in a number of different ways.  Your ads may appear in a number of different ways on a number of different devices. When users perform a search query on Google, at the top of the listings and on the right hand side are usually found “sponsored listings”. These are ads which are matched to the keywords of the search term. They may appear as the Leaderboard Ad shown below or similar to the small square button shown after the Leaderboard.

Google also makes use of the Google Display Network which places ads on content relevant websites. These ads can take the format of either of the ads above, including various sizes, or as “link units” such as shown below:


When users click on the ads, they are taken to the page specified by the advertiser. A fee is charged to the advertiser by Google. The Pay-Per-Click model of advertising means that the advertiser is only charged when a user clicks on the ad. If the ad is viewed, as you are doing right now, there is no charge to the advertiser. Thus, every dollar spent on advertising is spent driving traffic to your website. Not just taking up space on a website. Google AdWords is truly a pay for performance system.
